Harvest 2013; a difficult one!

Lots of rain and humidity and a very late start of the growing season made me nervous as to pick or hold. The problems were various for the 2013 harvest as the maturation generally was 2 weeks late and in every single vineyard the maturation was extremely variable from one vine to another. It was only until end of October that the situation improved and so we were forced to pick for the rosé over a time period from late September until end of October, whereas in a normal vintage we start mid September and finish end of September…

Having 4 hectares more this year, I was worried with getting the canopy management done and picking all the grapes in time. We worked long hours the cellar and the picking team did a great job. Financially the harvest cost us twice the amount compared to 2012 as this year we picked in 2 to 3 passages in every single vineyard which is extremely time consuming. But it payed off in quality.

We also suffered lack of space this year as all activities overlapped each other. The malolactic fermentations ended late and so we were bottling and preparing orders in the middle of the harvest.

It felt like preparing a full dinner for 100 people in a 4 square meter kitchen… crazy, but also very creative as to how save and make space!

At the end of October and early November, the weather was better and the kids joined us nearly every day for the harvest. Arturo is getting bigger and loves eating grapes so much he completely forgets everything else!
