  • Fast Food in China

    Date: 2007.05.27 | Category: Asia | Response: 0

There are two types of fast food operators in China: Western and Chinese. However, not until recently has western fast food become popular in China. It wasn’t that long ago that the general Chinese public had little idea about such terms as hot dogs, pizza, potato chips, and the such. The opening up of China has allowed many western companies and cultural influences to find their way into modern China.

Fast food has quickly found it’s place in modern China. The increasing tempo of life and adoption of western culture and attitudes has opened up a huge market for fast food operators. People on the move simply don’t have time to lose!

The speed of fast food is not the only consideration… marketing, flashy storefronts and clean interiors all help in making fast food a permanent fixture in the urban landscapes of modern Chinese cities. Nowadays it’s not unlikely to see Singapore fast food, Turkish fast food and Indin-Pakistan fast food making their way into Chinese homes.

  • How to Make Dumplings

    Date: 2007.05.27 | Category: Asia | Response: 0

Chinese boiled dumplings are not only delicious, they’re also easy to make.

The filling: Start by choosing your favorite meat, like pork, beef, or mutton. Chop it up and mix it with chopped yellow scallions or cabbage. Once you have mixed the chopped meat and scallions/cabbage we can add the seasonings. Some appropriate seasonings include salt, soy sauce, pepper, sesame oil, chopped green onion and ginger. The seasonings you use will depend on your desired flavour. Mix well in a container large enough to accommodate the ingredients.

Now we must work on the dough. We start with wheat flour, the amount you will need depends on the amount of filling you have prepared. In a container, pour water bit by bit, stirring it continuously. Allow the dough to rest for about 20 minutes. After that you can separate a piece of the dough and put it on a pastry board, knead it and cut it into small pieces. You should flatten each piece slightly with the palm of your hand and then roll it with a rolling pin into a round piece.

Now the final assembly… You should hold a piece of dough in one hand, put a suitable amount of filling into the rounded dough and fold the sides around the filling. Make sure to press it all in firmly enough to form a nice tight dumpling and prevent leakage of the filling. A nice finishing touch is to add a lacey decorative finish to the edge of your dumplings… if you don’t have a special tool you can use a simple fork.

On Mehndi, the people from Groom’s side visit the Bride’s place and each person present gift, money, sweets and put some Mehndi on Bride’s hand (Mehndi is actually a powder gotten from leaves of Henna tree and its paste leaves brown color on skin).
